Important guide to climates in Peru

The 3 regions of Peru

Peru presents a great climatic diversity due to its geographical position and its relief.
The Peruvian climate can be divided into two seasons:

  • The dry season (April-November).
  • The rainy season (December-March).

But the climate varies a lot according to the geographical region: the Coast, the Andes Mountains and the Amazon.
Each of these regions has specific climatic conditions that are summarized below:

  • On the coast
  • In the Andes mountain range
  • In the Amazon rainforest

On the coast

The Coast of Peru is desert.
Summer lasts from December to April with temperatures ranging from 25 ° C to 30 ° C and the climate is very dry and it hardly ever rains.
From May to September, temperatures are mild during the day (15 ° C to 20 ° C) and cool at night.
However, a thick, very humid and persistent fog called “Garua” covers part of the coastal region (especially Lima), preventing the appearance of the sun. This permanent mist, trapped by the Cordillera, prevents the formation of rains; There is also a severe drought despite a high humidity index. This very particular phenomenon disappears as we move north; After Chiclayo, the weather becomes frankly hot.

In the Andes mountain range

The thermal amplitude there is strong and can vary from 15 ° C to 20 ° C in the same day, due to the wind, the sunlight, which can change suddenly as well as the altitude.
The dry season lasts from April to November. During the austral winter, the temperature is mild during the day, ranging between 15 ° C and 20 ° C and less than 0 ° C at night. This season is good for exploring the region because the risk of rain is very low.
Be careful, Puno and the Lake Titicaca region can experience big cold waves in July and August.
The rainy season lasts from December to March. During the austral summer, the temperature fluctuates between 19 ° C and 25 ° C. The nights are cooler.

In the amazon rainforest

Very humid and tropical area, the rains are almost daily, but the showers last only a few hours.
April to November are the least humid months and temperatures are around 30 ° C. It could almost be called the dry season, as it only rains once a week.
The rainy season is from November to March. It is the flood, the frequent rains make it difficult to explore this region. These are also the hottest months, up to 35 ° C.
